Angel's Palace

“Angel’s Palace” grows out of Clarice Carolyn Herring Jones’ vision of empowering and strengthening the black community to resist domestic violence and sex trafficking through awareness and prevention. Sex trafficking is a $150 billion “industry” that involves kidnapping, sexual use of minors, and organ harvesting. The stage play describes a very real danger for young black women and children in society, that of sex trafficking and its attendant drug use and physical intimidation, in an unvarnished and brutal way. The stage play is not meant to a “comfortable” evening of entertainment, but a wake-up call to save thousands of children from horrible fates.

First, we are confronted with a mother who has no compunctions in using her children and her husband to get what she wants in any way possible, and with the human wreckage such behavior generates. It is not until the very end of the story that we see her show any concern or compassion, and even that “redemptive” act results in injury and death. This is not the usual picture of the black mother in popular fiction, but a manifestation of cruelty and evil.

Second, we are reminded that sexual attraction between the young is not always innocent, but can lead to the creation of a young person like RAW, corrupted by his elders, who grows to enjoy corrupting others. RAW’s actions are heedless of any societal norms or restrictions, and they call into question how some young black men are trained to find their way in general society.

Third, while the debate over various drugs is now centered on their
positive uses, their availability to those who would do evil are
recognized and their impact on young people is underscored.

Fourth, we are shown the willingness of the police and especially those with real power in the society to not only look the other way when seeing sex trafficking among black young adults and teens, but to make money from such behavior. This misuse of power is usually noted by black artists regarding the use of physical force by police, but here the emphasis is on the impact of those who have the power to change the societal realities, but are as much drawn to greed as Diane and assist in destroying young black women.

Finally, and most damning, is the presentation that even when well-meaning people in the justice system attempt to balance the scales, human failures ensure that justice will be turned against the most basic needs to punish the guilty and remove them from society. The ultimate reality that is suggested is that we are all complicit in creating and maintaining The Angel’s Palace
